Nokia Acquires Alcatel-Lucent for $16.6 Billion

So, Nokia is back in the business with the bang. Nokia has finally acquired telecom equipment company Alcatel-Lucent. The only concern about this acquisition was raised by European Union. According to commission that was overviewing this Nokia acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent :

Nokia’s strength in the telecoms industry is centered on Europe, said the Commission, while Alcatel-Lucent’s main presence is in North America. It added that with industry leader Ericsson still in operation alongside Asian rivals Samsung, Huawei, and ZTE, there remains a competitive market for telecoms equipment.

This is a huge transition for Nokia and clearly shows the intentions of the company that they are now focused on targeting consumers and industries. We are all familiar with Nokia failure of keeping his mobile division that was sold to Microsoft for just $7.6 billion. And now there are rumors that Nokia might sell its Here Maps to consortium of automakers. Mobile division deal with Microsoft will end next year and at this point selling Here Maps does not seem to be a good idea.

Anyhow, with Nokia acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent company sends out a clear message to other telecom equipment companies that Nokia is looking towards some serious business.
