Is it ok to Charge Overnight? – Solving Myths

Is it ok to charge overnightAfter the advent of smartphones taking over the mobile market, with so many applications, games, texts, calls and whatnot, it is extremely difficult to keep phones charged throughout the day. These apps and games tend to drain a lot of the battery and for people who work away from home or in places that do not have charging facilities, it gets even harder. Though there are portable chargers that are available nowadays, it isn’t easy to get your hands on one as they are still relatively new and cost quite a bit. Most mobile phone users tend to get home at the end of a long, hectic day and plug in their mobiles to charge overnight, and this raises the question; will the mobile phone get overcharged if left for 7-8 hours straight?

There is a little proof or explanation behind the yes’s and the no’s. For the time being, or at least from now on, mobiles will not get overcharged when left to recharge overnight. Earlier, when smartphones were still taking baby steps into the technological sector, phones made from Nokia and Motorola used to rule the roost. In the early and mid 2000’s, 75% of the markets were dominated by mobile phones made by the two giants. The recharging slot of their mobiles consisted of pin chargers that enabled charge to get into the alkaline batteries and recharge them. If left overnight, they had a risk of overcharging and this was an unwanted issue that people faced. Having to keep alarms to remove their phones off charge or finding different hours to recharge them.

However, once the smartphone boom hit, even the earlier models had batteries that tended to get overcharged when left overnight. Mobile scientists who worked on models to make sure that they didn’t overcharge came up with a simple solution to make sure that the power as well as the phones were safe during overnight or long hours of recharge. Once the charge reached around 95%, the charge would slowly build up to full bars. Something like a tap of water filling a bucket slowly decreasing its pace. There are indicators embedded into the system that tell the phone when the charge reaches its full threshold and it allows charge to slowly enter and then completely close the circuit so that the phone does not overcharge and the charge entering it is not wasted. So there is no problem in letting your  phone recharge overnight as it does not risk the phone’s battery.
